Ten facts on polio eradication
Once a much feared disease, poliomyelitis is now little more than an unpleasant memory in most regions of the world. Yet, although the number of cases has plummeted by 99% since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was first launched in 1988, the disease lives on in some places, mainly striking children under 5. According to World Health Organization figures, one in every 200 cases leaves the victim paralyzed for life.
Sanofi Pasteur has been involved in fighting this disease - which looks set to become the second infection to be wiped off the face of the earth - for over twenty years now.
